Azeroth Survivors troubleshooting
Azeroth Survivors can fail to load for a few common reasons: the free server is busy, your browser lacks WebGPU, or hardware acceleration is turned off. This page explains how to tell the difference between a normal loading screen and a real problem, and what to do when Azeroth Survivors will not start. Each fix is quick, and most problems have a one-click alternative: the Windows build or the developers' Discord.
Normal loading vs. a problem in Azeroth Survivors
Azeroth Survivors takes time to load, and a wait is not the same as a problem. If you see a progress bar, asset-loading messages or a hero picker after a few seconds, the game is working and you just need to wait. If you see a warning about WebGPU, a completely black canvas that never changes, or a message saying "Too many people are playing", the game has hit a real problem and will not start until you fix it or try the Windows build.
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Progress bar or loading text | Normal. Wait for the hero picker. |
| Hero picker appears | Game loaded. Click a hero to start. |
| "Too many people are playing" | Server busy. Try later or use Windows build. |
| WebGPU warning | Browser cannot run the game. Update or enable WebGPU. |
| Black screen, no progress | Possible WebGPU or focus issue. Check fixes below. |
The table above tells you whether to wait or act. If Azeroth Survivors shows progress, give it time. If it shows a warning or never changes from black, read the matching section below for the fix.
"Too many people are playing" – server busy error
When Azeroth Survivors says "Too many people are playing", the free server that hosts the browser version has hit its daily request limit. This is a capacity problem on the server side, not a problem with your browser, your connection or your computer. The game will not load again until the limit resets on the host's schedule, and you cannot make it reset faster.
What to do when the server is busy
You have three ways to play Azeroth Survivors when the server is busy:
- Try again later, especially outside evening peak hours when fewer people are playing.
- Download the Windows build, which is not affected by the daily limit.
- Join the developers' Discord to check for server news or alternative links.
The Windows build is free and runs the same game without using the browser server, so it is the most reliable option when the browser version is full. Thedownload page has the Windows link and install instructions.
WebGPU warning – browser cannot run the game
Azeroth Survivors draws its 3D world with WebGPU, a modern graphics API that not every browser supports. If your browser lacks WebGPU, the game shows a warning instead of the hero picker and cannot start at all. This is different from a slow load or a busy notice: without WebGPU, Azeroth Survivors will never run in that browser, no matter how long you wait.
How to fix the WebGPU warning
- Update your browser to the latest version. Current Chrome, Edge and Safari have WebGPU.
- On Linux Chrome, go to chrome://flags/#enable-unsafe-webgpu and turn the flag on, then restart Chrome.
- Make sure hardware acceleration is turned on in your browser settings.
- If those do not help, use the Windows build instead.
Firefox does not yet ship WebGPU by default, so switch to Chrome, Edge or Safari if you are using Firefox. The Windows build does not need a browser at all, so it is the fastest solution when your current browser cannot be updated or lacks WebGPU support.
Black screen: WebGPU vs. normal loading
A black canvas in Azeroth Survivors can mean the game is still loading assets, or it can mean WebGPU cannot draw the world. The difference is time and messages: normal loading shows progress text or finishes in under a minute, while a WebGPU black screen stays black forever with no progress. If you waited a full minute and nothing changed, it is a WebGPU problem, not a loading delay.
Fixes for a black screen that never loads
- Turn on hardware acceleration in your browser settings, then reload the page.
- Open Azeroth Survivors in its own tab instead of embedded in the home page:play in a new tab.
- Check for a WebGPU warning in the browser console (F12), and if you see one, follow the WebGPU fixes above.
- On Linux Chrome, enable chrome://flags/#enable-unsafe-webgpu.
- If none of those work, use the Windows build.
The embedded frame can sometimes cause focus or rendering problems that disappear when you open the game in a dedicated tab. Try that before you assume WebGPU is missing, because it is a faster fix than updating your browser.
Keyboard not working in Azeroth Survivors
If your keys do nothing in Azeroth Survivors, the game window does not have keyboard focus. Click inside the game once after it loads so your key presses go to the game instead of the page. Azeroth Survivors is entirely keyboard-driven, so without focus you cannot move and the run will not start.
How to give Azeroth Survivors focus
- Wait for the game to finish loading and show the hero picker.
- Click anywhere inside the game window.
- Try moving with the keyboard; if it works, you have focus.
- Do not switch tabs mid-run, because the browser may pause or throttle a background tab.
Keep the Azeroth Survivors tab active while you play, because browsers slow down or stop background tabs to save resources. A paused tab means a lost run, so if you need to step away, plan it between runs instead of during one.
Hardware acceleration and Azeroth Survivors
Azeroth Survivors needs hardware acceleration turned on to use WebGPU. If hardware acceleration is off, the browser cannot access your GPU and the game will show a WebGPU warning or a black screen. Check your browser settings and make sure hardware acceleration is enabled, then restart the browser and try again.
Where to find hardware acceleration settings
- Chrome / Edge: Settings → System → Use hardware acceleration when available
- Safari: Safari → Settings → Advanced → Show features for web developers, then Develop → Experimental Features → WebGPU
- If you cannot find the setting or cannot turn it on, the Windows build does not need a browser.
Linux and Azeroth Survivors
Linux players often need to enable an extra flag in Chrome before Azeroth Survivors will start, because WebGPU ships behind a flag on Linux builds of Chrome. Go to chrome://flags/#enable-unsafe-webgpu, turn the flag on and restart Chrome. If the game still shows a WebGPU warning after that, make sure hardware acceleration is also turned on, then try opening Azeroth Survivors in its own tab.
There is no native Linux build of Azeroth Survivors, so the browser version is the only option for Linux players. If Chrome with the flag enabled still does not work, check the developers' Discord for other players' solutions or look into Wine or Proton for running the Windows build on Linux.
When nothing works: Windows build and Discord
If none of the fixes above help, or if you would rather skip the browser entirely, download the Azeroth Survivors Windows build. It is free, comes from the developers and does not need WebGPU, a browser or the free server. Thedownload page has the link and install steps, and the developers' Discord is where you can report a problem or ask whether the game has a known issue.
The Discord is also the place to check when the busy notice appears often, because the developers post server news and any temporary alternative links there. This fan page cannot answer questions about server downtime or new builds; the Discord can.
Azeroth Survivors troubleshooting FAQ
Why won't Azeroth Survivors load?
Azeroth Survivors usually fails to load because the server is busy, your browser lacks WebGPU, or hardware acceleration is turned off. Check what the game shows: a "Too many people are playing" notice means the server is full and you should try later or use the Windows build; a WebGPU warning means you need to update your browser or enable WebGPU; a black screen that never changes means hardware acceleration may be off or you need to open the game in its own tab.
What does "Too many people are playing" mean in Azeroth Survivors?
"Too many people are playing" means the free server that hosts the browser version of Azeroth Survivors has reached its daily request limit. This is a capacity limit, not a problem with your computer or connection. The game will not load until the limit resets, so you can try again later, download the Windows build from the download page, or join the developers' Discord to check for server news.
How do I fix the Azeroth Survivors WebGPU error?
To fix the Azeroth Survivors WebGPU error, update your browser to the latest Chrome, Edge or Safari, because those browsers support WebGPU. On Linux Chrome, you also need to enable chrome://flags/#enable-unsafe-webgpu and restart. Make sure hardware acceleration is turned on in your browser settings. If your browser still lacks WebGPU or cannot be updated, download the Windows build instead, which does not need WebGPU or a browser.
Why is Azeroth Survivors showing a black screen?
A black screen in Azeroth Survivors usually means the game is loading, or WebGPU cannot draw the world. Normal loading finishes in under a minute and shows progress. If the screen stays black with no progress, turn on hardware acceleration, open the game in its own tab, or check for a WebGPU warning. On Linux Chrome, enable the unsafe WebGPU flag. If nothing changes, use the Windows build.
What is the difference between normal loading and a real problem in Azeroth Survivors?
Normal loading in Azeroth Survivors shows a progress bar or loading text and finishes with the hero picker. A real problem shows a busy notice, a WebGPU warning or a black screen that never changes. If you see progress, wait. If you see a warning or nothing happens after a minute, follow the troubleshooting steps for that specific problem.
Does Azeroth Survivors work on Linux?
Yes, Azeroth Survivors works on Linux through the browser, but you usually need to enable chrome://flags/#enable-unsafe-webgpu in Chrome first. Make sure hardware acceleration is also turned on, then restart Chrome and try the game. There is no native Linux build, so the browser is the only way to play on Linux unless you run the Windows build through Wine or Proton.
Why do my keys not work in Azeroth Survivors?
Keys do not work in Azeroth Survivors when the game window does not have keyboard focus. Click inside the game once after it loads so your key presses go to the game instead of the page. Keep the tab active while you play, because browsers pause or throttle background tabs and you will lose your run if the game loses focus.
How do I turn on hardware acceleration for Azeroth Survivors?
To turn on hardware acceleration for Azeroth Survivors, go to your browser settings. In Chrome or Edge, go to Settings → System and turn on "Use hardware acceleration when available". In Safari, turn on WebGPU in the Develop menu under Experimental Features. Restart your browser after turning it on, then try Azeroth Survivors again. If you cannot enable it, use the Windows build.
